IMS wrestlers compete at state

The Islander Middle School wrestling team sent 14 wrestlers to the Washington State Folkstyle Wrestling tournament on Jan. 27 at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Bremerton.

Phillip Frazier took first at the 128-pound weight class, Danny Stanke took seventh at 140 pounds, and Elliott Wittenberg took sixth at 135 pounds.

Other Mercer Island wrestlers competing included: Charlie Vetter (84), Connor Gullstad (84), Justin Rorem (84), Scott Mills (91), Peter Mahony (91), Edan Stern (98), Peter Scott (105), Sam Gottlieb (105), Blake Johnson (112), Sam Alpert (120) and Brian Rauzi (144). The coaches were Ben Porter and John Frazier.

The tournaments consisted of 1,500 competitors, with children from the entire state.

Many Islander youth finished in the top 10.

Wold wins 50 and 100 backstroke at All Star meet

Islander Grace Wold, a seventh-grader at Islander Middle School, won the 50- and 100-yard backstroke during the 2008 Pacific Coast All Star Meet held Jan. 12-13 in Carson City, Nev. Wold is a member of the Pacific Northwest Swimming’s (PNS) All Star Team.

Grace is currently ranked sixth in the country among 12-year-old girls in the 100-yard backstroke.

She competed in six individual events and on four relay teams at this meet. She also placed in the top six in all her events.
