Thunder in Maltby tourney
The Mercer Island 8-year-old Thunder baseball, an Island traveling team, placed third in the Maltby Invitational Tournament on June 29 through June 30. After a day of games that determined seeding on Saturday, the Thunder won its first game on Sunday against Newcastle 14-12. The second game was against the home tournament team, Maltby. The Thunder’s opponents were undefeated coming into the game and led during the entire game. With two outs and a Maltby runner on third base, the Mercer Island defense was pulled in and the Maltby batter hit a soft fly ball over the defense to win the contest 14-13. The Thunder won their third game against the Seattle All Star Sockeye 7-4 earning it third place at the tournament.
