Cloud Nine Islanders place second in league
The Cloud Nine Islanders nearly pulled the most improbable upset of their season in the championship game of the Seattle Rotary fifth grade Winter Basketball League.
After defeating Style Blue by a score of 38-34, the Islanders advanced to the championship game on March 11 against Style Black, a team the Islanders had lost their two previous meetings by margins of 29 and 18.
In the championship, the Islanders quickly found themselves in a 14-2 hole after one quarter.
It didn’t get much better in the second quarter as Style Black built a 30-8 halftime lead. But the Cloud Nine boys went on a 33-12 run to come within one point at 42-41 with time remaining in the fourth quarter.
But Style Black all-stars held off the scrappy Islanders and won the game, 50-46.
The loss marked the end of a strong season for the Cloud Nine Islanders, who finished the season with an overall record of 26-12.
The team consists of coach Don Maclane, coach Steve Stenberg, players Daniel Marinello, Peter Welch, Nate Schuler, Keegan Ogard, Karl Maclane, Jacob Stenberg, Christopher Lawler and Daniel Sims.
