The Mercer Island High School girls basketball team is the regular season KingCo champion for the first time in school history. The team wrapped up the title with a 56-50 win at Liberty High School Tuesday night.
"This is awesome," said Islander head coach Jamie Prescott, who also graduated and played for Mercer Island. "When I took this job five years ago it was my goal to do this in five year. All the kids believed and here we are."
The Islanders were led by three players that scored in double figures. Kate DaPron scored 11 points, while Hailey Gullstad and Jae Shin scored 10 each for Mercer Island. Senior Janelle Chow finished with nine points, seven rebounds, four steals and a block in the win.
The Islanders play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, during the final game of the regular season, as they travel to Mount Si.
