The Mercer Island High School girls water polo team finished second at state, following a 10-7 loss to Castaway Polo Athletic (CPA) in the state finals.
The Islanders kept the score tight, finishing the first period 2-2 against CPA. CPA surged in the second period, connecting six times with the back of the net to take a commanding 8-2 lead before the half. The Islanders tried to even things out in the third and fourth, upping the score to 10-4 and then 10-7 in the final moments of the game. Goals were scored by Christina Weed, Hailey March, Veronica Bone and Laura Horton.
In the first round of the state tournament, the Islanders beat Newport, 4-2, on Tuesday. Mercer Island kept the upper hand for most of the match, playing solid defense against the Knights. The Islanders held Newport to just one point until the last 30 seconds of the game, when the Knights scored for a 4-2 finish.
The Islanders’ first-year head coach Matt Jones was named coach of the year.
