With the spring sports postseason fully underway, athletes are busy qualifying for the state tournaments, many of which begin next week.
After the first day of the SeaKing district track meet the Islanders have qualified two for the state meet in Tacoma. Freshman Lindsay Benster cemented a spot in the 3,200-meter race while Monica Lee qualified for the discus event. The meet finals continue tomorrow afternoon at the Southwest Athletic Complex in Seattle.
In tennis the girls doubles teams of Michele Zemplenyi and Julia Schubach took on their teammates Kelly Crandall and Erica Leong for the district title. Both teams qualified for state. The first day of competition also saw Max Franklin and Andrew Smith earn a spot at state. This afternoon they will take on Zach Kosanke and CJ Smeraldo for third or fourth place. MIHS's second boys doubles team of Matt Stofsky and Matt Sediacek lost in the first round, finishing their season.
KingCo singles champ Chelsea Bailey advanced to the district finals, while Julia Zook will battle for a spot at the tournament during the 5th/6th place match. Jordan Smith will represent the Islanders at state, and Matt Ellis has a similar chance to play for the Islanders in Vancouver, Wash., depending on the outcome of his match this afternoon.
The state track meet begins next Friday in Tacoma, while the tennis teams will travel to Vancouver, Wash., to begin a quest for a title also on Friday.
