The Mercerwood Shore Club won the July 2009 Midlakes League Championships, held on July 20-22. The MSC brings the championship trophy back to the Island after a one-year hiatus in 2008. Mercerwood has earned the top honor in the league for four of the past five years.

Twenty-six teams from Bothell to Renton, Maple Hills to Seattle, competed in the Midlakes Swim League. The League Championship was decided this year in a series of timed final meets instead of the traditional preliminary meets and final “A” Champs meet. On Monday, July 20, the Senior Division Finals were hosted by the Mercer Island Beach Club, followed on successive days by the Junior Division Girls finals at Edgebrook and the Junior Boys Finals held at MICC.

Only 13 points separated the first and second place teams going into the final relay events at Junior Boys Finals on the final day of competition. The Mercerwood Shore Club’s 11/12 boys freestyle relay took first place with a new club record of 1:51.23 and secured Mercerwood’s League Championship for 2009.

Mercerwood’s swim team set a number of club and league records during the course of the summer season. One significant record was set by the 9/10 girls 100 medley relay with a time of 1:01.38, breaking the longstanding league record.

For the fifth year in a row, MSC completed the season undefeated in “A” Meets. The three Island clubs demonstrated their traditional overall dominance by placing in the top six at the Midlakes League Championships.
