For the first and second time, two Mercer Island residents gave triathlons a try, testing the water and road to see if it might become a lifelong love.

Putting their swimming, biking and running skills to the test were Kendall Riley, 9, and Kelley Berbaum, 9, who took part in the Sammamish Splash Triathlon recently. It was Riley’s first event, and the second time, Berbaum had participated in the sport.

Riley finished first in the 8- to 10-year-old girls division and finished third overall. Berbaum finished third in the same division and was sixth overall.
