Water polo takes all at fall invite
September 22, 2009 · Updated 3:00 PM
The Islanders water polo team brought home a first-place trophy following the Fall Invite at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. The high school, which took two teams to the tournament, saw the Islander A team finish with a 6-0 record. According to head coach Adam Massmann, the two teams split and combined JV and varsity. The Islander A team beat South Ridge, a team from Oregon, 15-4, in the final.
“Alec Staughan, a JV player on Islander A, had a great tournament, scoring three goals on the weekend and logging a lot of playing time against top teams in the Northwest,” said Massmann. He said both teams had developed a lot over the weekend and were looking strong.
Last Friday night, the varsity team took on Shorewood and won 20-6. Captain Kyle Nakagaki had six goals and JV goalie Kenny Trowbridge, who stepped up for the varsity goalie John Ahalt, who was sick, had six saves in the first quarter, which Massmann said kept the team in the game.
The team will play CPA on Friday in a match at Edgebrook Pool in Factoria. The start time is 5 p.m.
