The Newport girls basketball team remained undefeated after beating Mercer Island last night 52-40 in a non-league match up.

The Islanders, who returned from the Nike Tournament of Champions tournament in Arizona with a ninth place finish, were without leading scorer Hannah Lilly against the Knights. After a fast start the girls couldn't find the strong finish they usually possess, coupled with what head coach Jamie Prescott called uncharacteristic mistakes.

Jae Shin had a 13 point night, while Kate DaPron finished with 12 for the team. The Islanders currently sit at the top of KingCo 3A with a 7-3 overall and 2-0 league record.

See next week's Reporter for a full recap and look at the team's trip to Phoenix.
