Mercer Island basketball briefs: Girls dominate, boys split week

MIHS girls remain undefeated in league

Despite a final score with four points separating Friday night’s winner from the loser, the Mercer Island girls dominated against the Liberty Patriots to remain undefeated in league games. The Islanders (5-0, 10-3) beat Liberty, 56-52, at Liberty last Friday, after a 91-22 domination over Sammamish earlier in the week.

Against Liberty, the Islanders held a solid 33-27 lead going into halftime and continued their route to a win in the last two quarters of the game.

Three Islanders had 12 points during the win, Kris Brackman, Hannah Lilly and Jae Shin. Lilly is currently in third place in the league as one of the top scorers with 157 points so far this season, averaging 13.1 per game. Shin is close behind in seventh overall with 130 points and an average of 10.8 this season. During the win over Liberty, Heidi Black had eight points, as did Sarah Taylor.

Earlier in the week the team traveled to take on the Sammamish Totems, winning 91-22 in a league match. The Islanders jumped out to a fast start, scoring 27 points in the first quarter and ending the half with a 50-13 lead. Kate DaPron ended the night with 17 points for the team high, while Lilly had 16 against the Totems. Christina Williamson had 14 overall, and Black earned 11 for the Islanders while Lindsay Benster, Brackman and Lauren Ellis each picked up seven points for the team. Carly Andersen and Kaylia Balinbin each put up six points.

The girls will travel to Mount Si on Wednesday for another conference match, before hosting Juanita next week.

Boys basketball squeaks past Liberty

It was a narrow conference win for the Mercer Island boys basketball team last Friday as they beat the Liberty Patriots, 49-48. The Islanders (3-2, 5-7) earned their third conference win during the away game, after suffering a close loss to Sammamish earlier in the week.

Against the Patriots, Quinn Sterling had the team’s high with 10 points, while Gabe Fruchter added nine to the team’s total. Parker Scott and Kaj Sherman each added six, while Sean Hughes and Eric Stefanchik had five apiece. Jeff Lindquist added four and Sloan Aikens and Ben Emanuels put up two each.

This season, Sterling and Sherman lead the team in points per game, currently sitting in sixth and seventh for points in the league. Sterling has 159 points, with an average of 13.3 per game, while Sherman has 157 with a 13.1 average.

Last Tuesday, the Islanders traveled to Sammamish, where they lost 69-63 to the Totems. The MIHS boys led the Totems until the final quarter, when the Islanders couldn’t keep Sammamish from scoring as the Totems earned 25 points to the Islanders’ 14 in the last eight minutes. Through the third quarter, MIHS had been leading 49-44.

During the game, Sherman led the team with 16 points, Sterling had 14 and Brian Miller put up 15 for the team. Fruchter had five overall, while Jeremy Hagen earned four.

The team traveled to Mount Si to take on the second place KingCo team Tuesday night, after Reporter deadline. They will host Juanita next Tuesday, Jan. 26, starting at 7:30 p.m.
