Mercer Island fifth-grade girls basketball wins division title

The fifth-grade girls Mercer Island White team won the Puget Sound Travel League silver division title by beating Inglemoor in the finals.
The team, coached by Eddie Miles and assisted by Jill Sonsteby, started the tournament with a 43-42 win over Liberty, going on to face Redmond in the semifinals. Kate Daugherty and Adya Kumar each had 11 points and 9 rebounds in the team’s first win. Aolani Calderon had 9 points and 11 rebounds.
Against Redmond, the White team won 40-31, as Calderon had 14 points and 16 rebounds for a 12-point halftime lead.
In the championship game against Inglemoor, the Mercer Island girls fought for the lead in the first quarter, until the Vikings stretched a 4-point lead going into the second half. They held a 9-point lead partway through the fourth quarter, but the White team rallied to close the gap with just 30 seconds left on the clock, edging out Inglemoor, 27-26, in the last moments of the game. Calderon had 10 points and 17 rebounds for the Islanders, while Daugherty contributed 7 points, 12 rebounds and 6 steals in the last game.
