Hundreds from Mercer Island play in Spokane’s Hoopfest

Hundreds of people from Mercer Island traveled to Spokane two weekends ago for the annual Hoopfest 3-on-3 basketball competition, the largest in the world of its kind. Close to 30 teams of kids of all ages participated in the event, with several teams earning top finishing in their age brackets.

An Elite freshman team of Christopher Lawler, Peter Welch, Daniel Marinello and Daniel Sims took second place overall, losing 20-12 against a team from Coeur d’Alene.

A team of seventh-graders, including Nick Delman, Matt LeProwse, Sam Nordale and Johnny van der Velden, finished in second place, as did another seventh-grade team of Harrison Goonewardene, Sam Pugel, Anthony Scalzo and Josh Stenberg. They lost by one point in overtime in the final game. The sixth-grade team of Brooke Fitzwilson, Nalani Ogawa, Boo Williams and Kaylee Yan finished in first, winning their age division.

The sixth-grade team of Jack Delay, Justin Myers, Marcus Schiller and David Sims took third overall in their age division after making the tournament a comeback experience. With an overtime loss in their first game, the team was forced to win every game after that in order to keep playing, eventually piling up seven wins in a row.
