The All Star softball team, comprised of players from Mercer Island, Bellevue West and Bellevue East won the Junior Softball District 9 championships to earn a spot at the softball world series next month in Kirkland.

The team of 13 to 14 year olds, beat Eastlake/Sammamish 8-6 in the title game.

Eastlake/Sammamish had an early leave before the Bellevue/Mercer Island team scored twice in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead and never trailed again. They added three more runs in the sixth for the final score of 8-6. The two teams had met earlier in the tournament, in which Bellevue/Mercer Island won 10-4.

The tournament win gave the team an automatic birth to the World Series as the host team. The Junior Softball World Series will be held Aug. 15-21 at Everest Park in Kirkland and features teams from across the world.

Four members of the team from Mercer Island include: Lea Gikas, Claire McCarthy, Makenna Pellerin, and Sarah Yamaura.
