Cross-country teams compete at KingCo championships, Evans places first at boys golf districts | Mercer Island prep sports roundup

Cross country: The Mercer Island cross country team competed in the 2A/3A KingCo Cross Country Championships on Oct. 25 at Lake Sammamish State Park.

The girls finished fourth as a team and the boys finished third. The top finishers for the girls team included senior Alli Hixson, who finished seventh (20:36.73), and Sabrina Chun who placed 15th and set a new personal record (21:47.61). Hixson was also named to the 2A/3A 1st Team All-KingCo Girls Team. The top runners from the boys team included junior Connor Pettigrew in eighth (16:59.61), and senior Jaden Krauser in 13th (17:31.96). Both Pettigrew and Krauser were named to the 2A/3A 2nd Team All-KingCo Boys Team.

Both teams will compete at the 3A Sea-King District Championship meet on Nov. 2 at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Boys golf: Mercer Island sophomore Ethan Evans won the 3A Sea-King District Championships by shooting a 67, and teammate Camdon Gierke finished 15th with a score of 75. Evans was also named as a WIAA Athlete of the Week winner for the week of Oct. 13-19, after leading the Islanders to the KingCo team championship.

Girls swim and dive: The Islanders (6-2) wrapped up their regular season with a 144-41 victory over Mount Si on Oct. 24. Mercer Island swimmers and divers placed first in all 12 events. The 2019 KingCo Championship Finals will be held on Nov. 2 at Mary Wayte Pool.

Girls soccer: The Islanders (4-7-3) and the Interlake Saints played to a 0-0 draw on senior night on Oct. 24. The final home game of the season for Mercer Island will be against Bellevue on Oct. 31.

Volleyball: During the week, Mercer Island (5-5) lost two games, both in five sets, to the Sammamish Totems and Interlake Saints.
