Girls soccer finds their groove, Volleyball knocks off 4A Skyline| Mercer Island prep sports roundup

Girls soccer: The Islanders (3-6-1) earned a 1-1 tie against Bellevue (4-2-3) on Oct. 7, and picked up a 2-0 victory over Juanita (2-8-1) on Oct. 10. Mercer Island will look to keep their streak of positive results going when they travel to face the Sammamish Totems (4-3-1) on Oct. 17. The Islanders lost at home to the Totems earlier in the year by a score of 1-0.

Volleyball: Mercer Island (4-4) won the first two sets against Bellevue (10-1), but the Wolverines rallied to win 3-2 (24-26, 22-25, 25-20, 29-27, 15-13) on Oct. 7. The Islanders bounced back with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-22) victory over 4A Skyline (2-8) on Oct. 10.

Football: The Islanders (3-3) lost their first league game of the season in a 19-8 defeat to Juanita (1-5) on Oct. 11. Mercer Island will look to bounce back when they host Lake Washington (1-5) on Oct. 18.

Cross country: Both the boys and girls teams finished third in a quad-team meet on Oct. 8 at Marymoor Park. Senior Alli Hixson was the top finisher for the girls team, placing fifth (21:00.0). In the boys race, sophomore Kai Zettel finished eighth (16:46.6) and set a new personal record.

Boys golf: The Islanders wrapped up their regular season with a 191-191 tie against Skyline (8-1-1) on Oct. 10 at Plateau Club Golf Course in Sammamish. The team finished the regular season with a 7-2-2 record.

Boys water polo: The Islanders (2-6) suffered two loses during the week to Curtis and Roosevelt. After falling behind 13-4 against the Roosevelt Roughriders, the Islanders rallied but fell short in a 14-11 loss on Oct. 7. In their next game, the Islanders were overwhelmed by a score of 18-3 to the Curtis Vikings on Oct. 17.
