Mercer Island beats Lake Washington, advances to Metro crossover | Prep girls soccer

The Mercer Island girls soccer team scored a 2-1 victory over the Lake Washington Kangs in its KingCo 3A tournament loser-out matchup Tuesday night in Kirkland.

The playoff win was Mercer Island’s first victory over the Kangs this season.

Lake Washington (11-6-1) led 1-0 after a goal from Carlee Betterman in the 17th minute. The Islanders (10-6-2) responded in the 38th minute, when Kendall Riley found the back of the net off an assist from Jordan Snyder. A minute later, Jessie Stenberg put the Islanders ahead, scoring off an assist from Camryn Steiner.

Mercer Island will host Holy Names Academy (13-7-0, 6-4-0 in Metro 3A) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Islander Stadium. The winner will host a loser-out matchup on Saturday, while the loser will take on Southridge High in a loser-out game Saturday in Kennewick.

MI all-league honorees

Ten Mercer Island girls soccer players earned 2016 2A/3A All-KingCo recognition.

Goalkeeper Bella Johnson and defender Nalani Ogawa were named to the All-KingCo first team. Midfielders Grace Wall and Kendall Riley and defenders Kate Miller and Brooke Fitzwilson were named to the all-league second team.

Olivia Morris, Jackie Stenberg, Camryn Steiner and Josie Blakeslee earned honorable mentions.
