Mercer Island brothers medal at USA Judo tournament in Texas

Mercer Islanders Taylan and Tegan Yuasa recently competed at the USA Judo President’s Cup Tournament, which took place Nov. 19-20 in Irving, Texas.

Taylan Yuasa, a 2015 graduate of Mercer Island High School, won the gold medal in the 55-kilogram senior division. Through Nov. 20, Taylan was the top-ranked competitor in the nation at the 55-kilogram weight division and ranked second in the International Judo Federation in the same weight class.

Tegan Yuasa, an eighth-grader at Islander Middle School, took gold in the boys’ 48-kilogram Juvenile A division. Through Nov. 20, Tegan ranked eighth in the nation at 44-kilogram Juvenile A division and also ranked in the top 10 in the 48-kilogram class, tying for ninth.

Both Taylan and Tegan are members of the Budokan Judo Club in Seattle.
