Mercer Island dance and drill team among WIAA’s academic state champions for winter season

Mercer Island registered a cumulative GPA of 3.631.

Mercer Island High School’s dance and drill team was named the 3A academic state champions for their classification for the 2015-16 winter sports season, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) announced Thursday.

Presented by the WIAA, the Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires, the Scholastic Awards Program recognizes the team with the highest grade point average among all Washington high schools in their enrollment classification. Mercer Island registered a cumulative GPA of 3.631.

The academic state champions for winter include the following activities: band, basketball, bowling, cheer, choir, dance and drill, forensics, gymnastics, orchestra, boys swimming and diving, and wrestling.

The winning teams will be presented with a special plaque at the upcoming WIAA, Dairy Farmers of Washington, Les Schwab Tires state championships. A complete list of academic state champions may be found online through the WIAA website.
