Mercer Island sixth at KingCo championships, send seven to districts | Prep gymnastics

The Mercer Island gymnastics team advanced seven gymnasts out of the KingCo 2A/3A championships and into Saturday’s district meet.

Mercer Island placed sixth overall at the KingCo championship meet, which was held Feb. 4 at Issaquah High School, tallying a team score of 140.9.

Lake Washington won the meet with 168.7 points. With the top three teams moving on, the Kangs qualified as a group for the district championships, which will be Feb. 11 at Ballard High School. Bellevue placed second (158.775) and Interlake placed third (155.075) to also advance.

Islanders Mya Levin and Emerey Sampson each qualified for districts in all four of the meet’s events. Levin placed fifth on floor with a score of 8.5, was eighth on vault (8.275), placed eighth on bars (6.9) and was ninth on beam (7.6).

Sampson tied for fourth on vault with Liberty’s Ting Pan (8.4), tied for ninth on bars with Liberty’s Brooke Ury (6.7), placed 12th on beam (7.3) and was 13th on floor (7.15).

Emily Greaves qualified for districts for Mercer Island in two events, placing 13th on bars (6) and 13th on beam (7.1).

Also moving on for the Islanders were gymnasts Esther Leung, Madeline Gile, Sophia Tiscornia and Hannah Lewis. Leung tied for 10th on vault with Redmond’s Miyeko Johnson (8). Gile placed 11th on floor (7.95), Tiscornia was 14th on bars (5.9) and Lewis placed 15th on vault (7.65).
