Mercer Island soccer teams take first, second at Tukwila tourneys

Mercer Island High School athletes Riley Milburn and Joris Vandebospoort helped their Eastside FC BU17 White team win the 2017 Washington Youth Soccer Presidents Cup on Feb. 12 at Starfire Stadium in Tukwila.

The Eastside FC White team defeated Whatcom FC 1-0 on Feb. 5 and the Greater Seattle Surf 2-1 on Feb. 11 to advance to the championship match. In the final, Eastside FC dispatched Kitsap Alliance 1-0 to take the title.

Also in Tukwila, six Mercer Island soccer players helped their Eastside FC Boys 99 Red team finish second at the Washington Youth Soccer state championships, which wrapped up Feb. 12 at Starfire Stadium.

Ryan Moline, Mitch Meade, Mitch Graesser, Alex Platou, Reis Kissel and Hunter Bauman helped Eastside FC overcome Crossfire Premier 4-3 in penalty kicks in the tournament semifinal round to reach the title game. Eastside FC fell 2-1 to Washington Premier in a hard-fought final match.

All six players will compete on the soccer pitch for Mercer Island High School this spring.

                                The Mercer Island Islanders girls golf team captured first place at the Burlington Invitational golf tournament on April 16. The Islanders, who compiled 355 total points (low score wins in golf) edged out second place Sammamish by 28 strokes. Mercer Island golfers Ella Warburg and Gihoe Seo tied for second place individually, with each golfer shooting a 79 on the 18-hole course. The Islanders have won all four golf tournaments they’ve competed in during the 2018 season thus far.

                                The Mercer Island Islanders girls track team earned a 84-65 victory against the Liberty Patriots on April 5. The Islanders improved their overall record to 5-0 with the victory. Islanders athletes earning first place in their respective events consisted of Gretchen Blohm (200, 400 relay, 800 relay, 1600 relay), Margaret Baker (400, 800 relay, 1600 relay), Chloe Michaels (1600, 3200), Maya Virdell (300 hurdles, 400 relay, 800 relay, 1600 relay), Eliza Crenshaw (400 relay, 800 relay), Katie McCormick (400 relay, high jump), Ella Hensey (1600 relay, long jump), Faith Osei-Tutu (shot-put) and Aleksandra Kogalovski (pole vault).
