                                The Mercer Island Islanders volleyball team put together a season for the ages in 2017. Mercer Island, who finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 22-3, earned second place at the Class 3A state volleyball tournament on Nov. 11 at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. The Islanders lost to Capital 3-1 in the Class 3A title match. The Islanders won the second set 25-14, tying the match at 1-1 but lost the final two sets of action. Mercer Island defeated Gig Harbor (3-0), Stanwood (3-1) and Mount Spokane (3-1) at the state tourney.

Islanders’ 195-pound wrestler Donnie Howard captured first place at the tournament, registering a 3-0 record. Mercer Island 138-pounder Eli Pruchno (pictured) registered a second place finish, compiling an overall record of 2-1. Islanders’ 160-pounder Jonah Andrews captured second place with a record of 2-1.

                                The Mercer Island Islanders boys swim team earned first place at the 27th annual Kentridge Invitational meet on Jan. 6 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. There were 43 high schools who competed at the meet. Mercer Island compiled 698 team points. Mercer Island swimmer James Richardson nabbed first place in the 100 fly and second place in the 100 backstroke. Killian Riley registered a third place finish in the 200 free. Kyle Bailey finished in second place in the 200 IM. The 200 medley relay team consisting of Alex Edwards, Carson Coe, Bailey and Richardson captured third place. The 200 free relay quartet of Oliver Hoff, Nate Robinson, Coe and Riley tallied a third place finish. The 400 free relay team of Riley, Richardson, Robinson and Hoff registered a second place finish.

Mercer Island 126-pounder Jordan Tillinger (pictured) pinned his opponent in the third round. Eli Pruchno (138), Vinny Ricci (152), and Rina Li (120) registered pins in their respective matches. Jonah Andrews (160), Liam Farrell (170), Donnie Howard (182) and Owen Babeler (195) won by forfeit.

The Silver squad finished the 5/6 tournament with an overall record 2-2. The Mercer Island team captured victories against Bellevue and the Eastlake Cardinal. They suffered defeats against the New West Salmonbellies and South Sound 24/25. The Space Needle Shootout is the largest lacrosse tournament in the Northwest with more than 60 teams in attendance.

                                Islanders’ freshman Ava Motroni took second place in all-around with a score of 31.750. Motroni also captured first place in beam. Freshman Susie Lepow earned first place in bars, freshman Ally Lavin nabbed second place in bars and junior Mya Levin finished in third place in bars. Sophomore Emery Sampson registered a second-place finish in vault and Levin collected a third-place finish in vault.
