Mercer Island’s Schulz wins regional home run derby competition

Islander Middle School 12-year-old student Jakob Schulz won the Regional Junior Homerun Derby Championship on May 21 in Los Angeles.

Schulz, who competed in the 12U division, competed against 40 athletes from Washington, Oregon, Montana and California.

Schulz hit five home runs in the first round, advancing to regional final (which consisted of four competitors). Schulz connected on seven home runs in the next round on just 20 pitches, earning the championship.

Schulz will compete in the National Junior Home Run Derby competition during the Major League Baseball All-Star week in July in Miami.
