Girls soccer defeats reigning 3A state champs

Mercer Island girls soccer improved to 2-0 on the young season after shutting out reigning 3A state champs Edmonds-Woodway 3-0 Tuesday night at Islander Stadium.

Namya Malik scored twice in the game’s opening half, scoring in the game’s first and 37th minutes. Taylor Krause also scored for Mercer Island, while goalkeeper Bella Johnson recorded the shut out.

The Islanders will take on Lynnwood at 7 p.m. Thursday night at Lynnwood High School.

Boys golf falls to Liberty

Claiming three of the top five spots at Tuesday’s meet, Liberty boys golf picked up a 190-204 win over Mercer Island at Maplewood Golf Course.

Liberty’s Ben Graham topped all scorers, finishing the course with a score of 32 strokes. Zach Evens shot a 36 to tie with Liberty’s Collin Fletcher for second place, while Mercer Island’s Zack Gottesman placed fifth, shooting a 40 for the day.

Mercer Island will face Interlake at 4 p.m. Thursday at Twin Rivers Golf Course.

Volleyball beats Eastside Catholic

MI volleyball opened its season beating Eastside Catholic in four sets Tuesday night at Eastside Catholic High School.

The Islanders split the opening two games 25-19, 19-25 before closing out the Crusaders 25-14, 25-9.

Mercer Island will host Seattle Prep at 7 p.m. Thursday at MIHS.
