Rebels defeat Islanders girls basketball team in KingCo 3A playoff contest

The Juanita Rebels girls basketball team defeated the Mercer Island Islanders 53-43 in the KingCo 3A tournament on Feb. 7. Islanders’ freshman Annabelle Gersch scored a team-high 18-points in the loss. The Islanders will play in a loser-out, district playoff game against an opponent yet to be determined from the Metro League at 7 p.m. on Feb. 10 at Bellevue College.

                                The Mercer Island Islanders gymnastics team captured a third place finish at the KingCo tournament on Feb. 3. Freshman Ava Motroni earned eighth place in floor, 10th place in beam and 10th place in all-around. Freshman Susie Lepow nabbed sixth place on bars. Eight Mercer Island athletes, who are pictured in the above photo, will compete at the district meet including Lepow, Motroni, Ally Lavin, Carly Lightfoot, Mya Levin, Vivian Jacobs, Emery Sampson and Kaela Fukano.

                                The Mercer Island Islanders swim team captured first place at the KingCo swim and dive championships on Feb. 3 at Kamiak High School. The Islanders, who compiled a staggering 685.5 team points, dominated the meet. Skyline finished in second place with 576 total points. Newport finished in third place with 517.5 team points. Mercer Island’s James Richardson earned first place in the 100 free and 200 free. Richardson set a new meet record in the 100 free, clocking a time of 47.11. Gabriel Neale finished in first place in the 1-meter dive event. The 200 free relay quartet of Ethan Schwartz, Killian Riley, Carson Coe and Nate Robinson nabbed a first place finish. The 400 free relay team consisting of Oliver Hoff, Richardson, Robinson and Riley registered a first place finish, clocking a time of 3:11.71 which was a meet record. The Islanders will compete in the Class 3A Sea-King District meet on Feb 9-10 at Mary Wayte Pool on Mercer Island.

                                The Islanders 200 yard medley relay team of Nate Robinson, Killian Riley, James Richardson and Jake Headrick finished in first place. The 200 yard freestyle relay quartert of Hoff, Robinson, Riley and Richardson earned first place. The 400 freestyle relay team of Coe, Bailey, Shobe and Hoff registered a first place finish. Islanders’ swimmers registering first place finishes in individual events were Headrick (200 free), Caleb Apodaca (200 IM), Robinson (50 free), Bailey (100 backstroke, 100 fly), Richardson (100 free), Ralston (500 free) and Riley (100 breast stroke).

                                The Mercer Island wrestling team earned a 45-6 victory against the Bellevue Wolverines and a 57-12 victory against the Juanita Rebels on Jan. 9. Islanders wrestlers capturing victories against Bellevue consisted of Connor Pettigrew (forfeit), Jordan Tillinger (decision), Andrew Motz (pin), Eli Pruchno (pin), Vinny Ricci (pin), Jonah Andrews (forfeit), Liam Farrell (forfeit) Donnie Howard (pin) and Connor Hill (forfeit). Mercer Island grapplers registering wins against the Rebels consisted of Pettigrew (forfeit), Tillinger (decision), Motz (forfeit), Pruchno (pin), Mattias Harnay (forfeit), Ricci (pin), Andrews (pin), Farrell (forfeit), Howard (pin) and Hill (injury default).
