Three Mercer Islanders compete at state cross country championships

Three Mercer Island cross country athletes represented the Islanders at the 2016 3A state championships Saturday in Pasco.

Sophomore Maggie Baker placed 25th in the girls’ 5K with a time of 19:32.4. Junior Kayla Lee finished 46th with a time of 19:55.5. For the boys, senior Nate Benson placed 59th, finishing with a time of 16:50.6.

Holy Names Academy senior Jordan Oakes won the 3A girls’ race at 17:44. Lincoln High junior James Mwaura was the 3A boys’ top finisher at 15:32.9.

North Central High won the 3A boys’ meet as a team with a day-low score of 61. KingCo 3A’s Interlake placed second (139) and Redmond High placed ninth (208). Holy Names Academy won the girls’ 5K with a score of 53, while Redmond placed fourth (160) and Lake Washington placed ninth (201) overall.
