Weather doesn’t slow down Mercer Island track athletes

The Mercer Island track and field team headed south last week to participate in the 3A state championship meet at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The Islanders had six individuals competing in the meet after qualifying in the SeaKing district meet. Despite wild weather that included driving rain and high winds followed by patches of warm sun, the team competed well.
In the boys 1,600-meter race, Aaron Elefson finished 10th overall with a time of 4:22.57. He followed that with a seventh place finish in the 3,200 race, followed closely by teammate Nick Ford, who earned eighth.
In the boys 800 meter preliminaries Tyler Goolsby finished 11th with a time of 2:01.4. The top eight moved on to the final race.
Reid Jackson took fifth in his flight of the boys long jump competition. He leaped 20 feet even. In the javelin, Jackson tied for third place in his flight with Sunnyside’s Eric Amaro, with a throw of 158 feet and three inches.
In the girls competition, Carly Andersen finished fourth in her flight in the discus. She threw for 102 feet and seven inches. India Matheson from Shorecrest had the best throw of the group with a toss of 115 feet and five inches. Andersen also earned a fifth place finish in her flight of the javelin, with a throw of 123 feet and seven inches.
