Public Health of Seattle & King County has reported that more school-aged children in King County are becoming ill as flu-like illness increases at schools. The agency is closely monitoring the spread of H1N1 influenza (swine flu), which now numbers 384 cases in the county as of May 25. Officials are urging continued work by parents, schools and day cares to reduce the spread of infections.
Former Mercer Island resident Delores “Dede” Erchinger, 94, died at home with friends and family at her side on May 8, 2009, in Alaska. She was a 66-year resident of Mercer Island. Mrs. Erchinger was born on July 1, 1914, in Cordova, Alaska.

Youth Theatre Northwest is proud to present its annual student showcase: the Cabaret and Fringe Festival. Performed annually in the spring, the Cabaret and Fringe Festival is an opportunity for YTN’s older youth to envision and create their own evening of theater. The Cabaret and Fringe Festival features short plays written, directed and performed by teens, with songs. Music was chosen and plays were created in response to various themes: truth and lies, self-discovery and control. Youth worked for over two months under guidance from YTN staff as they created and produced their own evening of theater.
