What place on Mercer Island serves delicious European-influenced dishes to Islanders, soldiers and even Matt Lauer from the Today Show?

None other than Market House Deli & Catering, where the staff keeps busy serving breakfast and lunch to Islanders and catering meals to places such as the U.S. Army Reserve unit in Redmond.

Manager Stephanie Krieg begins work at 6 a.m., daily. But Krieg and the cook, who happens to be her mother, Nancy Glines, are a dynamic mother-daughter duo who know how to keep up with the pace.

Market House caters to the Army Reserve in Redmond two to three times every month, supplying reservists-in-training and recruiters with a selection of goodies ranging from muffins and quiche for breakfast to lasagna or casseroles for dinner. Whatever the case for dinner, it’s always “good, hot food,” as Glines puts it.

In addition to the Army Reserve, Market House caters to NetJets, a private airline in Everett, Wash. In April, the restaurant catered breakfast, lunch and dinner to Matt Lauer and an NBC crew for the Today Show series, “Where in the World is Matt Lauer,” through NetJets. Market House also stocked Lauer’s plane in preparation for his upcoming flight to Ireland while he filmed a segment about Boeing’s new Dreamliner at Paine Field in Everett.

Not every mother-daughter pair gets along both at work and in a kitchen.

“We have a good rapport,” said Glines, who cooks meals while Krieg manages the restaurant.

This isn’t the first time they have worked together. For more than four years, they owned a restaurant in Odessa, a tiny farming town in eastern Washington. Then they teamed up on Odessa’s newspaper, where Glines was the manager. Now, the trend continues at Market House, where Krieg has been the manager since December 2006. Krieg, in fact, offered the cooking position to her mother, who accepted despite short notice and relocated to the area from Odessa, Wash.

“It’s awesome. We both have the same personality. Mom knows what I’m thinking,” said Krieg, who lives in Renton. “I’ll put something in the oven, and she’ll take it out. I know what kind of product the two of us can put out.”

Glines and Krieg learned everything about cooking from Glines’ mother, Dotty Schauerman, of German descent. Kuchen — a sweet breakfast pie — was among Schauerman’s specialties. The family prepared food for Odessa’s Deutschesfest, a German festival, every year. In honor of Deutschesfest last September, Market House offered German selections such as sausage rolls, cabbage, hot sauerkraut and German potato salad.

Together, Glines and Krieg oversee Market House’s catering. “Catering keeps us on our toes,” Krieg said. Market House has a staff of four employees and is affiliated with Market House Meats in downtown Seattle. Owners Vic and Carolyn Embry bought out the Island’s French Market last year, which previously had been C’est Cheese.

This month, Market House plans to cater a Thanksgiving dinner for Verizon Wireless to benefit low-income families.

A revised menu was implemented last week with new items such as a prime rib dip, an egg salad and a chicken sandwich on focaccia bread. Veggie sandwiches are available as well.

“Our main idea is to give more of a variety plus highlight our specials from the past year,” said Glines.

Customers may also order items not listed on the menu. “We’re very accommodating,” said Krieg, who is on a first-name basis with many customers and anticipates what the regulars want to order.

Market House specializes in corned beef and pastrami, cured over a 14-day process and sliced for sandwiches. Corned beef was especially popular on St. Patrick’s Day in March, when customers consumed 16 tons of the Irish staple. Among Market House’s other offerings are gift baskets filled with meats, cheeses or sweets, and “Grab-N-Go” items — quiche, fresh sandwiches and salads for those who don’t have time to wait in line.

Market House is open for breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on the weekend for breakfast only. Catering is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Market House Deli & Catering is located in the Island Corporate Center at 7525 S.E. 24th St., Suite 100, and can be contacted at (206) 232-9810.
