Mercer Island Farmers Market offers unique live music program

While many other Seattle-area farmers markets rely on acoustic buskers to provide ambiance for shoppers and spectators, the Mercer Island Farmers Market has invested time and money into a unique live music program.

Paul Sommer, who serves on the market board of directors and books the market’s 18-week music schedule, said that his goal is to provide “good music to go with good food.”

“We know people come for the fresh veggies, but it would be nice if they also came for a picnic, and to listen to music, with the park right there,” Sommer said. “I’m hoping that in the future, there might be more people that come for the music.”

Sommer, a 27-year resident, plays guitar for the Fabulous Roof Shakers, who have performed at Art Uncorked and Mostly Music in the Park. He advocated for the market to invest in a sound system, and for the musicians to be paid.

A highlight of the music program is always Caspar Babypants, who will perform on Aug. 27 with The Birdwatchers. The Mercer Island High School Jazz Band kicked off the 2017 season, performing at opening day on June 4.

According to the market schedule, The GingerUPs will play this weekend, followed by Kelly Bosworth on July 30 and Beth James on Aug. 13.

Sommer uses local connections to book bands. Mikaela Kahn, of the Texas-based indie folk duo Beth James, went to Mercer Island High School with Sommer’s daughters, and performed at MIHS graduation.

Other performers over the rest of the year include Larry Murante, String Cats Duo, The Archtops, Gypsy Jazz Trio, Yaamba Marimba Band, Rain City Ramblers and Michele McNany.

The main sponsor for the music program is the Mercer Island Center for the Arts (MICA). MICA “has been serving in the same mission — bringing our community together through the arts,” Sommer said.
