MIVAL welcomes entries for junior art show, scholarship

Entries Welcome for First MIVAL Jr. Art Show

Following the success of its inaugural Holiday Art Workshop last December, MIVAL Jr. is now planning its first art show, a month-long exhibition at Mercer Island’s Covenant Shores’ Lighthouse Gallery, according to a MIVAL press release.

The organization is now accepting submissions from young artists in grades 6-12.

Initiated from the inspiration of Mercer Island High School sophomore Brandon Hill, MIVAL Jr. is a Mercer Island Visual Arts League program that supports, mentors and empowers young artists (grades K – 12) to initiate art events, create art, network and participate in art-related activities.

MIVAL Jr.’s holiday workshop brought together dozens of MIVAL members, MIHS students and young artists to produce a wide variety of festive art for the season.

The Lighthouse Gallery Youth Art Show, April 29-June 3, will take place at Covenant Shores Lighthouse Gallery, 9150 Fortuna Drive.

“I am so excited about MIVAL Jr’s first exhibit,” Hill stated. “We are creating unique opportunities for young artists to display their works and broaden their community exposure. It’s great for everyone involved.”

Registration for the show is open now at www.tinyurl.com/mivaljrspring17, but gallery space is limited. For more, see www.mival.org.

MIVAL is also offering a visual arts scholarship. MIVAL encourages and supports emerging, committed and deserving high school senior visual artists in their desire to continue their art education. Any 12th grade high school student residing or attending school on Mercer Island who plans to enter a college, university, community college or art institution, with the intention of pursuing an art major or continuing in the visual arts field, may apply.

The application deadline is April 24, postmarked or emailed. Mail submissions should be sent to MIVAL Scholarships, P. O. Box 134, Mercer Island. Email submissions should be sent to wcarol11@comcast.net.

MIVAL’s seventh annual Treasures in Miniature Show runs during the month of April. There will be a reception from 5-8 p.m. this Thursday.
