The Swerland and Youssefnia families hosted a bake sale at the North end QFC on Thursday afternoon, helping to raise money for those affected by Superstorm Sandy and the nor’easter currently hitting the coast.

The children made several hundred chocolate chip cookies, along with other bake sale items.

“The kids have personally made hundreds of chocolate chip cookies (no nuts), along with other baked goods,” said Scott Swerland, the father of the kids putting on the bake sale, and brother of Shauna Youssefnia. “It’s really about raising money for the victims of the terrible Super Storm Sandy.”

Max, Jordan and Layla Youssefina, and their parents Shauna and David, hail from New York City, and have many relatives who live in the great Tri-State area who have been affected by the storms. They were joined at the bake sale by Jacob, Eli and Luke Swerland. Both sets of children attend West Mercer Elementary.

Swerland said the families have already secured a $1,000 matching gift that will go to the American Red Cross. The families will also be donating to the New York Cares foundation.

“It is so important to give back to the community, and I am very proud my kids at such a young age want to carry on our tradition of giving back,” said Swerland.

In two hours the group was able to raise $2,340 to donate.
