Blood needed – Mercer Island Covenant Church to hold drive Dec. 17

Holidays slow blood donations - more needed to help make up the difference - and save lives.

The Puget Sound Blood Center will have 50 percent fewer donors over the last two weeks of this year due to major holidays falling on Tuesdays.

As the holidays approach, PSBC expects their blood supply to wane. For the first time in four years, Christmas and New Year’s Day are mid-week. This will cause a large drop in donor availability from the Friday prior to Christmas all the way through the Friday after New Year’s Day. In order to make up the difference, significant and special support is needed from donors.

Just last week, a 12-year old received a heart transplant at Seattle Children’s Hospital and needed 19 units of blood products. In addition, an 8-month old baby survived a liver transplant due to having 22 units of blood. These two patients alone needed the support of as many as 41 blood donors.

Please donate and share this message with your coworkers and friends. All are needed to help boost the blood inventory so patients, their families, and their care providers will have something to be very grateful for this holiday season.
