In the girls 3A tennis tournament, Islander singles player sophomore Chelsea Bailey finished in second place, losing only to Natalie Allen of Holy Names in the final. Bailey beat players from Mt. Rainier, West Valley and Union before the last game of the tournament in Vancouver, Wash.

In the girls doubles tournament, Michelle Zemplenyi and Julia Schubach finished third overall, in a repeat KingCo champions match against their own teammates, Erica Leong and Kelly Crandall, who earned the fifth-place trophy.

Zemplenyi and Schubach beat a team from Capital and Mt. Spokane before falling to the second-place team of Catherine Fitch and Catherine Phelps, of Lakeside. Leong and Crandall beat teams from Evergreen and Hanford before losing to the state champion team of Anissa Bryant-Swift and Malia Lum of Sammamish, a team the Islanders had battled against all season.

In the 3A boys state tennis tournament, Islander freshman Jordan Smith lost in the first round, but won two consolation matches in a row before falling in the semifinals to Kevin Kosanke of Bellevue, 6-1, 6-2.

In the boys doubles competition, Max Franklin and Andrew Smith took third place overall after beating their first competitors from North Thurston, 6-2, 6-1, then lost to Jake Knox and Curtis Lan of Hanford in the semifinals. In the duo’s last game of the tournament, the team beat CJ Smeraldo and Zach Kosanke of Bellevue, 6-3, 7-5.

Head coach Joyce Hedlund said the teams provided an excellent end to two great tennis seasons.
