From the Kiwanis to the Mercer Island Visual Arts League to the Chamber of Commerce, Island community service organizations and educators handed out dozens of awards to the Mercer Island High School Class of 2011 on May 26.

The Senior Awards Program represents the community’s appreciation and support for its youth.

The awards included recognitions as well as scholarship monies that are funded by service organizations in the community. The program also included awards from national, regional and local organizations that share this common mission. A total of 62 awards were presented.

“This event was something new for Mercer Island High School,” said Kate Lepp, the organizer of the event. “I think it all went very well in the end.”

MIHS alumni Wendy Rosen, Jim Pearman and Mark Kaye presented the awards for the Max Block Scholarship, the Bicentennial Award and the Jack Reynolds Scholarship.

The presentation also included appointments to the U.S. Military Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and U.S. Marine Corps awards.

Commencement ceremonies are at 7 p.m., June 9, at the Meydenbauer Convention Center in Bellevue.
