City accepting applications for MI City Council vacancy

Mercer Island residents who are interested in serving on city council can submit applications to fill a Position No. 7 vacancy.

Daniel “Jake” Jacobson, who held Position No. 7, passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on March 30 following a medical emergency.

According to the city, the term will commence once a candidate is appointed by a city council majority vote and will expire after the results of the Nov. 4, 2025, general election have been certified.

Applications are due to the city clerk by 5 p.m. on May 28; candidate interviews and appointment will take place in June (meeting dates to be determined); and the swearing in of the new councilmember will occur on July 1 at council’s regular meeting.

Applications received after 5 p.m. on May 28 will not be accepted.

Residents interested in applying must have resided within the city of Mercer Island for one year and must be a registered voter, the city said.
