What’s next for the Recycling Center site?

The Mercer Island School District has closed the Recycling Center, yet the future of the Town Center property is still open to ideas. The city would like you to share your opinion on what to do with the site, located next to Mercerdale Park. Go to www.surveymonkey.com to complete the online survey.

The Recycling Center, located on city property, has been operated by the Mercer Island School District through the help of volunteers. The site has been a source for community interaction and Mercer Island’s commitment to sustainable development for nearly 34 years.

Graduate students from the Bainbridge Graduate Institute have been invited by the city to help in the development of a community engagement plan to discuss options that best serve the needs of the community and the legacy of the Mercer Island Recycling Center. Islanders are encouraged to get involved.

VOICE volunteer registration

This summer, the Mercer Island Youth and Family Services will be offering two youth volunteer programs: Volunteer Outreach in Communities Everywhere (VOICE) for high school youth, and Summer Volunteer Program (SVP) for middle school youth. Registration is now open for both and will close at 5 p.m. on Monday, April 12. Those interested can visit www.mercergov.org/voice and www.mercergov.org/svp to sign up. For additional information and questions, please contact Tambi Cork at tambi.cork@mercergov.org or 275-7755.

I-90 road work continues

Through the morning of Friday, April 2, crews with the Washington State Department of Transportation will continue their work on westbound I-90.

Up to three left lanes from east of Bellevue Way S.E. to the western entrance of the LID will be closed from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The crews are working to preserve and strengthen the lanes.

While the lanes in both the east and westbound directions are bumpy, WSDOT said they will be smoothed out in the near future.
