City releases update on comprehensive plan and code amendments

City intends to extend docketing period

In order to correct a staff error in a public notice issued earlier this summer, the city intends to extend the docketing period for 2021 comprehensive plan and code amendments. At its Oct. 6 meeting, the city council will discuss an ordinance to move the deadline to Nov. 2 for the public to submit proposed amendments.

Each year, requests for amendments are placed on a docket for initial consideration by the planning commission and city council. The city council decides which amendments on the docket will receive further review in the coming year. For more information and to submit a proposed amendment, residents can contact Robin Proebsting, senior planner, at (206) 275-7717 or robin.proebsting@mercergov.org.

According to the city’s website, the comprehensive plan — which was last updated in 2016 —is a long-range planning document establishing goals and policies affecting changes to land uses, natural resource protection and city facilities and services over the next 20 years. In addition to population, traffic and development forecasts, the plan includes an inventory and assessment of existing conditions on the Island.
