Islanders compete at track and field championships

Twelve track and field athletes represented Mercer Island at the 3A state meet May 28-30 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The girls finished in the top 15 as a team, placing 12th overall.

Twelve track and field athletes represented Mercer Island at the 3A state meet May 28-30 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The girls finished in the top 15 as a team, placing 12th overall.

Kayla Lee, Victoria Gersch, Piper Casey and Kendra Watson finished second in the 200 meter relay at 1:41.56.

Gersch also placed fifth in the 100 meters (12.49) and sixth in the 200 (25.55). Lee was fifth in the 400 meters (57.59), while Cece Rosenman placed 11th in the 3200 (11:32.12). Watson also competed in the 300 meter hurdles, and the team of Lee, Casey, Kendall Riley and Alexa Bauman competed in the 400 relay.

In the field, Casey placed 12th in the long jump with a mark of 16-1.

For the boys, Nathan Gallatin placed sixth in the 800 meters (1:54.58) and Greyson Weltyk finished 16th in the high jump, registering a mark of 5-10. Gallatin, Emerson Schulz, Luke Bohlinger and Jonathan Perr also competed in the 400 relay.
