Mercer Island fourth in KingCo tournament, advance to districts | Prep fastpitch

The Mercer Island fastpitch team finished in fourth place in the KingCo tournament last week, earning the No. 4 seed into this week's SeaKing district tournament.

The Mercer Island fastpitch team finished in fourth place in the KingCo tournament last week, earning the No. 4 seed into this week’s SeaKing district tournament.

The Islanders started the tournament at Hartman Park in Redmond against Liberty on May 9. The Islanders won 5-4.

Liberty was up 1-0 at the end of the first inning and added another run in the bottom of the third, while Mercer Island scored one run in the top of the third for a 2-1 game. The fifth inning saw the Islanders score one run, while Liberty scored twice, to give the Patriots a 4-2 lead. But the Islanders scored three unanswered runs in the sixth to win the game.

Morgan Peyou was 4-4 at the plate, with two runs scored and one RBI. One of her hits was a triple. Kacey DiJulio was 2-4 with one run, two RBI and a double, while Maiya Loucks was 2-3 with two runs scored.

After the win over Liberty, Mercer Island faced the No. 1 team Juanita on Friday, May 10. Juanita won 3-2 on Friday, advancing to become the KingCo champion.

Mercer Island moved into the consolation bracket, playing Interlake on Friday afternoon. Interlake won 7-1, to finish in third place, while Mercer Island finished in fourth.

As the No. 4 team, Mercer Island advanced to the SeaKing tournament, which begins on May 15 at Lower Woodland Park in Seattle. The Islanders will play Chief Sealth at 2 p.m. The winner of the match will play Bishop Blanchet at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The loser will be finished for the season.
