Mercer Island is Playful City 2009

The national nonprofit organization KaBOOM!, dedicated to bringing play back into children’s lives, has named Mercer Island as a 2009 Playful City. Mercer Island was one of 93 cities across the nation to be selected. The Island was also a Playful City winner last year. According to KaBOOM!, the honor goes to cities that have “created and implemented programs to positively impact childhood wellness, public safety and the quality of life.” “Each of the 2009 Playful City U.S.A. communities demonstrated creative commitments to the cause of play in the areas of quantity, quality and access,” according to a KaBOOM! press release. A primary goal of Playful City U.S.A. is to encourage cities and towns to share creative ideas, concepts and programs in an effort to increase play opportunities for children. In order to be a contender for the award, cities must apply a year in advance.
