The Mercer Island School District can expect to have 300 or more students by 2022.

The Mercer Island School District Board of Director heard from schools demographer Les Kendrick on an update to the demographic study that he prepared for district schools in 2008.

According to the report, enrollment in the Mercer Island School District is currently tracking above the medium range projection from 2008 by 152 students. Elementary enrollment in October 2012 is within one student of the 2008 projection, while middle and high school enrollment has trended higher than that earlier projection.

Estimates for future enrollment indicate that population growth and the K-12 population in particular will increase in the coming decade. This is supported by state forecasts of births and the K-12 population, and the present forecast of births, which show an average of 2,000 more county births per year between 2006 and 2016 than occurred between 1995 and 2005.

Using a medium range, 10-year projection (2012-2022), Kendrick forecasts that the district will have 4,565 students, or 300 more students than are presently enrolled.

In 2007, enrollment was 3,845 students.
