Arlene Azose, math and science teacher at Islander Middle School, was awarded first place in Ivar’s 13th annual Teacher of the Year contest.

Azose’s dedication, creativity and ability to inspire her students while always treating them with respect and kindness were some of the reasons sixth grader Maggie Petersen cited in her nominating essay.

As a first place winner, Azose will receive a $150 gift card for school supplies.

Chris Cocklin Ray, fifth grade teacher at West Mercer Elementary, was among 15 second place winners presented by Kidd Valley restaurants.

“Congratulations to Arlene and Chris on being recognized for their dedication and outstanding commitment to our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano in a press release. “Thank you to their students for nominating them, and to Ivar’s and Kidd Valley for honoring teachers in this way.”
