Mercer Island girls swim and dive placed third at the 3A Sea-King district championships Saturday, Nov. 7 at Mary Wayte Pool.

The Islanders registered a team score of 197. For the second year in a row, Lakeside reigned supreme with a team score of 289. Bainbridge Island was second at 203.5.

Mercer Island had state qualifiers in 11 events, including all three relays. Maeve Murdoch, Esther Choe, Sabrina Kwan and Alex Williams all qualified for two individual events.

Murdoch placed second in the 200 free (1:55.68) and fourth in the 100 free (53.86). Choe was second in the 200 IM (2:13.22) and posted a state-qualifying time in the 100 fly at 1:00.39. Kwan placed fourth in the 50 free (24.99) and also had a state cut in the 100 fly at 59.34. And Williams recorded qualifying times in the 200 IM (2:11.40) and 100 free (55.71).

Mercer Island had two finishers make the final round of the district diving event in Hadley Michaels (4th) and Kayla Varney (12th).

Also advancing to this weekend’s state tournament were Sammie Edwards (200 free), Heather Robinson (50 free), Ellie Williams (500 free), Audrey Hixon (100 back) and Mari Nielsen with the 200 medley relay team.

The 3A state girls swim and dive championships will take place this weekend at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. Preliminaries begin at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, while the finals will begin at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14.
