The Mercer Island Preschool Association (MIPA) has agreed to donate $14,000 to install new, toddler-safe playground equipment at Luther Burbank Park. The area will also be accessible for disabled persons and seniors, according to the MIPA. The City Council accepted the organization’s donation at its July 6 regular meeting. Total project costs will reach $24,000, including in-house labor. The $10,000 not covered by MIPA donations will come from the city’s Capital Improvement Project (CIP) fund. Following installation, the Parks and Recreation Department will be responsible for maintaining the play area. Parks staff and volunteers intend to install the new play structure and renovate the current playground this summer.

Financial help for Island preschools

Mercer Island Youth and Family Services has funding available for low-income families seeking tuition assistance from September 2009 through June 2010. The support is provided through fundraising efforts of the Mercer Island Preschool Association. Qualifying families must satisfy income eligibility requirements, live on Mercer Island and enroll their child in a licensed Mercer Island preschool, daycare or all-day kindergarten. The application deadline is July 30.
