Zack Elliot, an eighth-grader at Islander Middle School, won the USTA Arthur Ashe essay contest in August by writing for the United States Tennis Association Pacific NW Web site (“Over the Net”). As the winner, Elliott was flown with his family to the U.S. Open for a week. His article, “Game, Set, Match,” was published in Johns Hopkins University’s Imagine magazine.

Discipline problems have never been an epidemic for the Mercer Island High School football team, but the program has seen its share of incidents. While discipline is always a concern for parents, coaches and teachers, it is agreed that the best approach is to solve a problem before discipline is needed. The ideas of being a better citizen and getting the community more involved in Islander football are both aspects of the team’s new community outreach program.
A 16-year-old high school student was taken to Overlake Hospital in Bellevue after police found her intoxicated at the high school football game on Friday, Oct. 3, around 8:45 p.m. According to the police report, she was arrested, processed at the Island police station and taken to the hospital for observation.
Police and court documents obtained last week show that a former Islander suspected of killing his wife and himself in Virginia late last month had been in trouble with Mercer Island police in the past.
The Mercer Island School District will extend its Math Curriculum and Program Review until Friday, Oct. 10. The review, which includes an online survey at www.surveymonkey.com, has been going on for several weeks. The district’s goal is to evaluate the current math program based on newly adopted standards, school district and national assessment data, as well as teacher, parent and student survey information. A committee of administrators, teachers and parents will use the information to evaluate the district’s math program.
