The Hawaiian-themed Winter Pineapple Classic 5k fun run was held last Saturday at Mountain Meadows Farm in North Bend and raised more than $400,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Washington/Alaska Chapter.

Three-year-old Ryan Peterson of Mercer Island was the honorary chair of the event.

Nearly 3,000 participants, including many Islanders, some donning grass skirts, costumes and even a bikini or two, battled the fierce winter elements to finish the 5k obstacle course and help raise money for the fight against blood cancers.

“This is the sixth year we have held the Winter Pineapple Classic, and it is still truly inspiring to see so many enthusiastic people come out in full costume and brave the cold weather to raise money for a great cause,” said Wilma Comenat, campaign director for the regional Leukemia & Lymphoma organization.
