Kittens killed

Kittens killed

Police were called to the south parking lot of Luther Burbank Park about suspected animal cruelty at about 5:30 p.m. Oct. 25. An Island woman told police she witnessed the dumping of seven kittens from a backpack by an unidentified suspect. When found, one of the kittens was already dead from what appeared to be an attempted drowning. The six remaining kittens were wet and in physical distress. The young cats were transported to Aerowood Animal Hospital in Bellevue, where three died and one was euthanized. Two kittens survived.

DUI juvenile arrest

At about 2 a.m., Oct. 22, a 17-year-old Island boy was arrested by Mercer Island police on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The youth had been driving a green 1993 Ford Ranger truck across the intersection of S.E. 27th Street and 78th Avenue S.E. when he was stopped by police. The boy refused to take field sobriety tests. He was arrested, transported to Mercer Island Police Department, and released to his father. The vehicle was impounded.

DUI arrest

A 54-year-old Woodinville man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs at about 6 p.m., Oct. 23. The man, who was driving a black 1997 Audi Cabriolet, was stopped by police for a traffic stop in the 7700 block of North Mercer Way. The driver failed field sobriety tests. He was arrested and transported to the Mercer Island Police Department, where he was released to a friend. The car was impounded.

Car prowl

Someone broke out the passenger side window of a Honda Accord between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., Oct. 20, while the car was parked in the 2300 block of 60th Avenue S.E. A fleece jacket and bag stolen from the vehicle. Loss and damage to the car is estimated at $325. Fingerprints found on the vehicle were submitted as evidence.

Stolen garbage cans

Sometime before noon, Oct. 25, someone stole two garbage cans and three lawn recycle containers from a residence in the 7000 block of North Mercer Way. The house number is written on the missing cans.

Car prowl

On Sunday, someone broke out the rear passenger side window of a Honda Accord parked in the 2000 block of 80th Avenue S.E. and stole a black leather purse that had been left on the floorboard of the vehicle. The crime occurred between when the car’s owner, an Island resident, left the car parked at about 11:15 a.m. and when the resident returned to the vehicle at noon.

Residential burglary

A residence in the 2700 block of 70th Avenue S.E. was burglarized at about 12:15 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27. The suspect, described as a white man, approached the resident while the homeowner was gardening in the front yard of the residence. The suspect claimed to be collecting donations for Krispy Creme donuts. When the resident expressed no interest in donating, the suspect pretended to leave, but is believed to have walked around the residence and entered the home through an unlocked rear door. A wallet containing identification, bank and credit cards, $50 cash, and assorted other items, was reported missing from an upstairs bedroom. A family member returned home during the burglary and surprised the suspect, who fled through the front door of the home on foot. A witness reported that he drove away a few blocks from the home, in an unidentified vehicle. Fingerprints from the home were taken into police evidence.

Fraud and theft

Between Oct. 17 and Oct. 20, someone stole about $23,800 from an Island resident’s bank account. The funds were siphoned out of the victim’s account through the Internet payment company Paypal.com.
