Suspicious incidents
Parks Department employees found two suspicious garbage bags at 7:30 a.m. May 4, in the parking lot at Island Crest Park, 5500 Island Crest Way. One bag contained empty containers of inactive chemicals and the second bag contained an ammonia-based material. Fire and police officials determined the situation not hazardous. The items were disposed of by the fire department.
In a separate incident at 8:55 a.m. May 4, park employees saw someone dump a garbage bag filled with mail, in a dumpster in the lower parking lot at Lid Park. The suspect was driving a white, 1994 Ford F-150 truck, registered to a male resident of the 2200 block of 78th Avenue S.E.
Altercation at Albertsons
A 15-year-old Island girl dented the passenger door of a 2003 Chevrolet truck in the parking lot of Albertsons in the 2700 block of 77th Avenue S.E. at 5:20 p.m., May 2 after she and two male juveniles were involved in a verbal dispute with the truck’s owner, a 41-year-old Island man. A shouting match of obscenities began when the driver told the youths to get out of the roadway. The driver parked his vehicle in the parking area as the arguing escalated. The girl told police she was angered by the man’s insults and she ran at him and kicked his vehicle repeatedly as he began to drive away. Police arrived after the driver called 911. The juvenile’s parents were called and the girl’s mother agreed to pay for the vehicle damage, estimated at $1,500.
Stolen items
A computer, digital camera and clothing were missing when an Island resident moved into a condominium at the Chateau Apartments, in the 2900 block of 76th Avenue S.E.,on May 2. Miracle Movers, Inc., of Bellevue was hired to assist in the move, but after the resident discovered the items were missing and contacted the company, they refused to authorize a claim, as the moving company’s representative said no items were missing. The items were estimated at $3,680.
On May 1, a resident of the 2200 block of 70th Avenue S.E. reported someone stole $1,300 cash from a desk drawer in the resident’s home on or around April 26. Police suggested the residents get a lockable safe if they plan to keep large amounts of cash in their home.
A laptop computer was discovered missing at 9 a.m. April 30 from Mercer Island Care and Rehabilitation, 7445 S.E. 24th St. The social worker who owned the computer said items on the hard drive are irreplaceable.
Found items
A diabetic test kit was found at 12:20 p.m. May 2 in the 7600 block of West Mercer Way. The kit was placed in police found property.
Camera equipment was found May 1 in the park area in the 5400 block of Island Crest Way.
Drug arrests
Two Island teens were arrested for possession and consumption of drugs and alcohol in the parking lot of Island Park Elementary School, 5437 Island Crest Way, April 30. A patrol officer noticed the youths parked in the school lot at 12:30 a.m. The 17-year-old driver told police he had not been drinking, but 40 grams of marijuana were found inside the vehicle and outside the passenger-side window. A partially emptied bottle of vodka also was found, which the passenger, a 15-year-old female Mercer Island High School student, told police she had been drinking. The teens were arrested, fingerprinted and photographed at the police station then released to their parents.
Stolen vehicle
A white 1996 Toyota Camry was stolen from the parking lot of Island House, 7810 S.E. 30th Street, sometime between April 28 and 29.
Property damage
At about 9 a.m. April 27, someone broke the driver’s side rear wing window of a 2003 Toyota Sequoia sport utility vehicle parked on the west side of Pioneer Park, in the 6600 block of 84th Avenue S.E. The window appeared to have been broken by a BB gun pellet. Damage was estimated at $500.
