Mercer Island High School seniors Samantha Schwartz, Hannah Burnett, Anna Marsh and Quinn Finneran have been named Rotary Islanders of the Month for May and June.
The Rotary Club of Mercer Island honored the students at its June 3 meeting at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.
Instructor Holly Purcell nominated Burnett and noted, “Hannah demonstrates high ethical and moral standards in our school and the community. She is always helping her peers and has been irreplaceable as a peer mentor. Her love for all student mentees’ well-being and overall success at school is more than commendable. Hannah is a natural, poised, and calm leader.”
When nominating Schwartz, instructor Parker Bixby said, “Sammy epitomizes what powerful, fun and effective servant leadership looks like in our schools. She is a senior trumpet player and section leader in the MIHS Band program but does so much more. Sammy is the head of the newly formed MIHS Pep Band, which is 100% student organized, rehearsed and run.”
Instructor Elysse Forester nominated Finneran and said, “Quinn has always had an interest in the natural world, especially flowers. When she started horticulture as a junior, I knew that she found a space she needed. Quinn flourished in class over the past two years, and her enthusiasm and dedication spread well beyond the walls of our classroom. She has been a leader in planning and organizing community events, such as a flower design workshop.”
When nominating Marsh, instructor Andrea Confalone noted, “If you have ever seen Anna on the basketball court, then you know exactly how she approaches academic life. With talent, skill, grit, determination, perseverance, Anna tackles any challenge she faces in her classes. She is an excellent self advocate who seeks out help and clarification when she needs it. She is a hard worker who is not satisfied until she has mastered concepts.”
